The first Moravian star is thought to have been a 110 point star made in the 1830s, the result of a geometry lesson at a Moravian boys school in Niesky, Germany.  Around 1880, Peter Verbeek, an alumnus of the school, began making the stars and their instructions available for sale through his bookstore.  His son Harry went on to found the Herrnhut Star Factory, which survived damage during the World Wars and continues to make Moravian stars to this day.
