Price: $22.99

This Moravian Star Ornament is hand made of paper, has 26 points-18 square and 8 triangular, and is signed and numbered by the artist. The star is approximately 2 ½ inchs in diameter, and it represents the Star of Bethlehem.

Also known as Herrinhut star, the Advent star and the Star of David. The Moravian star is an important symbol in the Moravian communities in the United States and Germany. It represents the coming of Jesus Christ. Little is known about its history, but it is believed to have been an outgrowth of a geometry class in a Boys' School in Niesky, Germany in 1850. It has been handed down from generation to generation in Moravian families.

This star was made by Hilda McKnight, a retired middle school teacher. McKnight has demonstrated star making at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History, taught classes at the North Carolina Museum of History, and still teaches classes at Clemmons Moravian Church in Clemmons, NC. Although the churches only display the star during the season of Advent, McKnight displays her stars throughout the year, reminding others of Christ's constant presence in our lives.
